Home > Flying Sites > Pennsylvania Slopes [Courtesy of Dave Harris, soarntz "at" aol.com, February 1999] Chickies Rock (Columbia, Pennsylvania)The name of this flying site is commonly referred to as Chickies Rock, though Chickies Rock is about 1/2 mile north of the slope. The name of the park site (part of Lancaster County Parks) is Breezy View. The location is about 10 miles west of Lancaster on US Route 30. Take the Columbia exit Route 441 and go North up a steep incline. Just before the top of this hill turn left. The slope is less than 1/4 mile. The lancaster Area Soaring Society (LASS) considers itself the "host Club" (myself being the current President) though has very limited control over activities there. AMA is required. The landing zone is a large grass area. Best wind is Northwest, but West works well to (accross river is another slope that works with South & southeast wind, though these winds are not as common). The winds prevail from the Northwest and west from October through March. 10 mph seems to be the minimum speed and much over 25 mph seems to destroy the lift. Safety Issues (PLEASE READ THIS!)
The height of the slope is about 300 feet. Typically, planes of the EPP variety are what is flown since allot of informal combat is flown (Zagis' are quite popular now). during the week Sparrows or similar wood and/or fiberglass ships are flown. Anyone interested should feel free to contact me, at the above address. |
